TOPICS:  infer the theme and important topics of a poem; explain how the poet uses certain poetic techniques/tools to create the message; analyze the diction of the poem; relate the main ideas and messages of the poem to the controlling idea of an expository text; write a response that explains what the poet does to create the message and how the messages of two different texts are similar

ACTIVITIES:

1.  Read "Invictus" which can be found Invictus here.
2.  Discuss the message of the poem and the tools the poet uses to create meaning as well as the poet's background and how his background relates to why he wrote the poem
3.  Complete the reading check for the Sports Illustrated article.
4.  Finish missing/make-up assignments/review Newsela quizzes.

TOPICS:  infer the controlling idea of an expository article, analyze the article, identifying opinions of the author and important topics, distinguish the most important details, and draw conclusions about the ideas in the articles

ACTIVITIES:

1.  Read Mo'ne Davis, Taney take center stage at Little League World Series which is the Sports Illustrated cover story about Mo'Ne Davis, the infamous Little League pitcher
2.  Complete the critical thinking questions with a partner
