OBJECTIVES:  Students will (1) identify appositive and participial phrases in a sentence in order to understand how writer's create sentences; (2) explain the specific purpose, controlling idea, and make inferences about expository text (3) evaluate expository literature through writing and develop response with effective supporting details

ACTIVITIES:

1.  Watch appositive and participial phrases  grammar videos on youtube

2.  Copy model sentence #3 and analyze:  "One evening late in January, a 21 year old name Peter Dut led his two teenage brothers through the brightly lighted corridors of the Minneapolis airport, trying to mask his confusion."

3. Complete your OER for "The Lost Boys of Sudan" article if you did not do so on Thursday/Friday.  Leave it in the black tray with the substitute.  Make sure you highlight it  (Answer to the question = green; paraphrased and "cited" = orange; your conclusions and connections = yellow)

4.  Read the following article: Team Hoyt article

5.  Complete "Similarities of Team Hoyt and Lost Boys" and share it with terri.davis@ptpirates.org AND to tdavis@ptisd.org  Here's how:

     1.  Copy the information into a new Google doc OR the Pages app
     2.  Rename the document with your name and class period.
     3.  Complete it and share it with both email addresses above.

If you have trouble completing this electronic assignment or do not have your iPad, ask the substitute for a paper copy.

Activities:

(1) Model Sentence 2:  "Two days earlier they had learned about light switches and stairs for the first time."

(2) Flipped Journal:  "The Snake and the Wasp"--listen to the read aloud and then paraphrase

(3)  Read "The Lost Boys of Sudan" by Sara Corbett p. 592 

(4) Complete comprehension and vocabulary practice

Objectives:  Students will (1) understand the real world application of grammar;  (2) use listening skills to identify most important details of a fable, paraphrase the fable in writing and write the moral in complete sentence.  You will also practice internet research over a topic of choice, identifying most important and interesting details about a topic related to war.


Activities:

Objectives:  Students will (1) analyze the syntax/grammatical structure of a model sentence;  (2) use listening skills to identify most important details of a myth, paraphrase the myth in writing and write the message in complete sentence.  (3) write about the previously researched topic; (4) watch and analyze a media documentary for the author's purpose, organization, and types of appeal


Activities:

(1) Copy model sentence 1 into grammar notes and analyze syntax of sentence.
(2) Brain dump researched material
(3)  listen to "Ares and Athena", paraphrase, discuss and answer the question "What two sides or war are revealed through the Greek gods Ares (pathos) and Athena (logos)?" and introduce types of appeal
(4)  Watch the documentary "The Lost Boys" (click on link to view video) 60 Minutes Part I (12 minutes) and complete critical thinking questions
